Excursions and Social Program
 
No special requirements are necessary to attend the following excursions. All locations can be reached easily by foot. Hard boots and weatherproof clothes are recommended, in particular for excursions A-1 and B-3. The temperature in the caves is around 0°C. The specified times indicate the duration of the excursion, but do not include the transfer and accommodations.

6.6. (Sunday)

Pre-Workshop Excursion: Dachstein-Rieseneishöhle, Dachstein-Karstplateau (Obertraun)
Dachstein-Rieseneishöhle (Dachstein-Riesen ice cave) is one of the two largest ice caves in Austria. It includes fantastic ice formations and up to 100 m long and more than 15 m thick underground glaciers.
(2-3 hours).
The Dachstein is a ~30 x 15 km wide karst massif and hosts some of the largest cave systems in the Alps. We will use the cable car to get to an elevation of ~2,100 m where we will start a short hike on the northern rim of the plateau. (2-3 hours)

7.6. (Monday)

Vistit to Hallstatt The small village of Hallstatt is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located at Lake Hallstatt and famous for early settlement (5000 B.C) as well as for a long tradition of salt mining. A guided trip through the village will be followed by a dinner and a boat trip on Lake Hallstatt. (2 hours)

8.6. (Tuesday)

Dachstein-Mammuthöhle (Obertraun)
With an overall passage length of 65 km, the Dachstein-Mammuthöhle (Dachstein-Mammut cave) ist the third longest cave in Austria. It is famous for its voluminous galleries and hosts also remarkable ice-formations. (2-3 hours)
B-3 9.6. (Wednesday) Eisriesenwelt (Werfen/Salzburg)
Eisriesenwelt cave is among the largest ice caves in the world. Its underground glaciers are several hundred meters long and cover huge areas, and the ice formations are spectacular. (3 hours)
B-4 10.6. (Thursday morning) Koppenbrüllerhöhle (Obertraun)
Koppenbrüllerhöhle (Koppenbrüller cave) is situated in the valley. Being an active cave with an underground driver, it presents an interesting contrast to the high elevated ice caves.
B-5 10.6. (Thursday afternoon) Piano concert in Dachstein-Rieseneishöhle Once more we will visit Dachstein-Rieseneishöhle to witnness a special event: A piano concert in the ice cave! A dinner at the Restauarnt Schönbergalm will officially close the Workshop. (1 h)
C-1 11.6. (Friday) Post-Workshop Excursion: Small group trips to caves in the region. Longer walks and special arrangements are necessary. An additional extra fee of ~30 Euros will be charged on site. More information will be posted when available.
