Deadlines

  • Deadline for submission of manuscripts for a special issue in The Cryosphere is 1st of June 2010.

Scientific Sessions
Session
Description
1 - Meteorology Subsurface heat exchanges driven by the cave ventilation and hydrology provide a complex setting controlling the formation and conservation of cave ice. We particularly welcome contributions which focus on the relationship between the external atmosphere and the ice cave meteorology.
2 - Glaciology Cave ice is far from being uniform. Physico-chemical properties, crystal structures, and various inclusions provide insights into the history and evolution of the cave ice. Further topics of this session include the determination of ice volumes and the assessment of cave ice mass-balances.
3 - Palaeoclimatology This session focuses on the potential of cave ice for palaeoclimatological and palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. Key issues are dating techniques, analysis and interpretation of climate proxies, and modern proxy calibration studies.
4 - Socio-economic and historical aspects Many ice caves are popular tourist attractions and are therefore of local and regional economic importance. Significant changes in the ice-mass balance of these caves, e.g. due to regional climate change, represent a major challenge for the showcave management. Studies dealing with this issue, as well as the general socio-economic role of ice caves and their historical development are welcome.
5 - Open session All ice cave related topics not covered by any of the above mentioned sessions are included here.

Guidelines for Presentations

  • All presentations must be held in English. Oral presentations are scheduled for 15 minutes lengths and 5 minutes discussion. Please provide your presentation in either Microsoft PowerPoint format (.ppt) or Portable Document Format (.pdf) on a memory stick (USB) or a CD prior to the session. Posters must be of reasonable size and layout. Maximum length / height are 150 cm. Make sure that all diagrams and figures can be clearly read. The abstract volume can be downloaded here (note: a printed version will be handed out at the workshop).

Special issue of The Cryosphere

The organizers of IWIC-2010 foster a set of high-quality manuscripts to be published as a special issue of 'The Cryosphere' (Link). This open-access e-journal was launched by the EGU in late 2007 and is covered by the SCI.

As for all EGU journals, papers submitted to The Cryosphere will be pre-reviewed and posted on The Cryosphere Discussion (TCD) website (www.the-cryosphere-discuss.net). This step will be followed by an eight week interactive discussion including referee's comments and author's replies. After completion of the peer-review process and, if accepted, the final version of the papers will be published electronically.

Prospective authors are encouraged to contact the IWIC-2010 organizers to assist planning of this special issue (abstracts@iwic2010.info). General guidelines for manuscript preparation can be found at www.the-cryosphere.net/submission/index.html. Deadline of submission for papers to be considered for this special issue is 1st of June 2010.
