Planning holidays via the Internet and finding the appropriate information can be a daunting experience. Single locations provide Internet Mapping Services for promoting their recreation facilities. These solutions are limited to certain locations and activities. Information is most often provided in one or two languages.

In the pan European project GEORAMA a new framework is created, gathering tourism regions and their sports activities in a central access point. A web portal for sport practitioners, tourists as well as local populations provides multilingual information based on GIS technology. The latest European standards for data interoperability are considered for setting up an open GIS architecture. We report our experience with the ESRI ArcIMS 4.0.1 and the available Standard OGC Connector.

Location based services (LBS) have lately become a hot subject. The telecom industries need attractive applications to sell their next generation network appliances. Geographic data providers anticipate a public market for their data and marketing promises ubiquituous guidance to specified or recommended places. The vision is as fascinating as the service is complex. We argue that such a service is graded based on the benefits it yields for the user. We feel that basic research is needed in several directions. Hence, to show the complexity of a beneficial navigation service in a traveller's scenario, we present a typical example from Vienna.

van der Vlugt, M. and S. Winter (2001): GIPSIE: Promoting Interoperability and OpenGIS in Europe. Towards a European Geographic Information Infrastructure. J. F. Dallemand. Ispra, Italy, Joint Research Centre.

Interoperability is crucial for the future viability of the GIS industry. Europeans feel a lack of sufficient organisation and access to the international interoperability specification. Full participation and integration of European interests into the process is the best chance to gain competitiveness.
This fact is recognised, among others, by the European Commission, who put much effort into stimulating developments in this field. The motivation for such stimulation is found in the fact that in the nineties, the European GI-industry was seen losing market share in its home market, which grew by 18%. Especially to small and medium size enterprises (SMEs), interoperability and OpenGIS offer opportunities to regain market share for their GI-software and -services.
Under the ESPRIT programme, the GIPSIE project is responsible for stimulating the European GI-industry by enhancing its participation in the OpenGIS process. This article focuses on the "what, why and how" of the GIPSIE project, as well as the experiences learned from the project.

Discussions about GIS Education should not only include methodological and technological aspects, they have to focus on content. Nowadays, there seems to be a trend from 'Big GIS', as built and used by large organizations, to 'Small GI' enterprises selling small pieces of information to individuals. GIS Education needs to adapt to this trend by extending its content to include legal and business aspects regarding geographic data. A GIS Education model based on three pillars, Geo, Info, and Business, is therefore proposed. It is further argued that curricula have to move from a GI Science perspective to a GI Engineering approach to satisfy industrial demands for the required skills of graduates.
