Requirements for GIS User Interfaces in Environmental Information Requests by Citizens

National and European laws and regulations give citizens a right to access environmental information. Current GIS, however, lack the necessary usability to serve citizens or government employees in accessing such information. The goal of this study was to find usability requirements imposed by citizen access to environmental information. Its hypothesis was that easy to use information access is possible by implementing suitable paradigms and metaphors in World Wide Web form. The results are a discussion of the requirements and a prototype of a WWW interface based on a Television metaphor.
